Overview

Our essay explores the metadata of all published translations of Hungarian literary texts into other languages in the period between 1800-2009. Our data is derived from two sources: Tibor Demeter and Rózsa Óvári Demeter: Bibliographia Hungarica (-1978), and UNESCO's Index Translationum. We are tracing the changes in the shape of Hungarian literature as seen from the outside, through the prism of translations: what authors were translated into what languages in each decade. This is part of a larger project, whose ultimate aim to reconstruct the world system of translation flows from the perspective of Hungarian writing.
